Your myotherapist is concerned with the individual as a whole, taking into consideration all factors which generally contribute to a persons’ symptoms. Pain and/or dysfunction affecting movement and mobility may arise for a myriad of reasons, however our Myotherapists’ are professionally trained to identify and treat the cause, rather than simply treating the symptom alone.
WHY MAY I NEED TO SEE A MYOTHERAPIST? Here at Soma Health and Wellness in Hawthorn, our Myotherapists' are qualified to apply care in the preventative, corrective and rehabilitative phases of therapy in order to restore and maintain the normal and pain free function of the soft tissue structure (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) of the human body. They are concerned with the individual as a whole, carefully taking into consideration environmental, emotional and/or biomechanical factors which are large contributors to one’s symptoms.
Often myofascial (myo – muscle and fascia – connective tissue) pain is described as a non-specific, deep seated ache, tightness or tender to the touch. The intensity of pain may vary and can often refer to other areas (referred pain patterns). Through the use of massage, muscle manipulation, dry needling and corrective exercises, Myotherapy can successfully assist with conditions such as:
- Headaches and migraine pain
- Back pain and back problems
- Sciatica
- Frozen shoulder, shoulder pain and impingement syndromes
- Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue
- Arthritic pains and joint dysfunction
- Pains associated with pregnancy
- Sports injuries
- Occupational injuries
- Stiffness and pain
- Knee, leg and foot pains due to injuries or poor biomechanics
- Hand and finger numbness and elbow pains
- Pregnancy - Pre and post natal complaints
- TMJ – jaw related problems
- Chronic overuse injuries
What should I expect from a consultation? Your initial Myotherapy consultation will take 60 minutes including a thorough history taking, assessment of particular joints and range of movement, orthopedic testing where required, palpation of soft tissue integrity and hands-on treatment. This may include deep tissue massage, myofascial release, stretching, dry needling, mobilisation and relaxation work. Our Soma myotherapists are skilled to identify environmental factors that may be contributing to your pain and often indicate how to correct workplace and home ergonomics, prescribe stretches and exercises and outline lifestyle factors to be considered.
Can I claim Myotherapy on my private health insurance? Soma has the convenience of the HiCaps facilities for easy, on the spot claiming through your private health insurer. It is important that you contact your Private Health Insurer to determine if you are covered for Myotherapy services.
